KWM01: hi vickie
QueenSidhe: Hiya Kelvin QueenSidhe: How are you? KWM01: ok, you? QueenSidhe: Doing good. KWM01: at work? QueenSidhe: yup. :-) KWM01: yuo need a vacation. :-) QueenSidhe: :D QueenSidhe: First holiday since New Years will be Memorial Day. KWM01: yow, long wait QueenSidhe: Then this summer, I'll be taking off again to go to Laughlin from time to time. KWM01: get a chance to reaad the book? QueenSidhe: Yup. QueenSidhe: I liked it, although I thought the beginning was kind of unrealistic. QueenSidhe: Maybe too innocent. KWM01: true, but the book was written a long time ago QueenSidhe: Yeah QueenSidhe: Treecats and how they were discovered kept coming into mind. :D KWM01: lol QueenSidhe: Even the celery and Extee-3 are similar. QueenSidhe: Now, we just need to see if Extee-3 has the same affect on Fuzzies as celery does on treecats. KWM01: true, I did catch that. QueenSidhe: Does it ever explain why fuzzies like Extee-3? KWM01: The second book explains that. QueenSidhe: k. QueenSidhe: I've started Fuzzy Sapiens, so I should find out in a day or so. :-) KWM01: :-) KWM01: my favorite is the third book. QueenSidhe: Is that one only a couple days/weeks after book 2? QueenSidhe: Or has more time passed? KWM01: I think about a month or two. QueenSidhe: k QueenSidhe: What did you think of the definition of sapience? KWM01: very simplistic KWM01: but I guess it's just common for the time it was written QueenSidhe: It made me wonder if parrots, that gorilla who could talk with sign language, dolphins, etc. would be categorized as sapient under that definition. KWM01: can't make fire. :-) QueenSidhe: lol QueenSidhe: Are you talking about the talk and make fire definition or the one they agreed on at the end? KWM01: talk make fire QueenSidhe: Ahh. QueenSidhe: I was talking about the definition they decided to use at the end. KWM01: that one just went over my head. QueenSidhe: :D KWM01: favorite scene? QueenSidhe: Let's see, some of the points were the ability to symbolize and create. KWM01: yeah QueenSidhe: I wonder if the gorilla could do that. QueenSidhe: I would think so if it learned to talk. KWM01: create yes symbolize, I don't know QueenSidhe: I guess another criteria would be that the species as a group would have to do all that and not just an individual. QueenSidhe: Although the group could potentially do that. QueenSidhe: On the edge of sapience! QueenSidhe: And I guess the same could apply to parrots, etc. too. KWM01: parrot mimic sound so I'm not sure about that. QueenSidhe: I remember reading in Dixon's Vixon about intelligent parrots or other pet birds. KWM01: to symbolize you have to understand what your saying and use it in different ways QueenSidhe: True KWM01: I think parrots only mimic a sound they assosiate with food. KWM01: want a cracker? :-) QueenSidhe: It'd be interesting to see if any of those animals become sapient. QueenSidhe: :D QueenSidhe: I'm not quite sure about that, but I don't know anything about birds, so.... QueenSidhe: They might be on the verge of sapience too. And it might just be the individual bird, so doesn't quite qualify. KWM01: I think the two closest to sapience ar dolphins and simians. QueenSidhe: Me too. QueenSidhe: Although, I haven't heard/read much about dolphins. KWM01: maybe i've watched too many flipper movies. :-) QueenSidhe: :D KWM01: so, favorite scene? QueenSidhe: Mmm. QueenSidhe: I'm not sure. Might be when Jack's fuzzies show up at court. QueenSidhe: What's yours? KWM01: I think my favorite is when they find out that the fuzzies escaped and messed up that guy's office QueenSidhe: LOL. That was good too. QueenSidhe: brb KWM01: k QueenSidhe: back QueenSidhe: I liked the comment about the constables not searching the fuzzies. KWM01: yeah, but who searches a teddy bear? :-) QueenSidhe: If you think you need to search the fuzzies, it seems like you're presupposing that they are sapient. QueenSidhe: :D QueenSidhe: Otherwise, yeah, why would you need to search them? KWM01: the fuzzies remind me of the Ewoks. I wonder if that's where the ewoks came from. QueenSidhe: I really think this is a simpler version of the treecat world and it's a nice way to have a glimpse of that universe. (Me, who likes the treecats in the honorverse best.) KWM01: me too. :-) QueenSidhe: Yeah, Ewoks or gremlins come to mind when I picture the fuzzies. Or bears. QueenSidhe: I wish there had been more than a paragraph or two from the fuzzies' point of view. QueenSidhe: That would have been interesting. KWM01: the second books the same way QueenSidhe: What about the third? KWM01: Little Fuzzy get lost and you get to see the world from his point of view QueenSidhe: Ooooh QueenSidhe: Very cool. KWM01: uhh, I better say that he gets lost in the wilderness. KWM01: but he recruits some fuzzies and explains the human world to them QueenSidhe: Hmm. KWM01: the one thing that bothered me about the book is the technology. QueenSidhe: What about it? QueenSidhe: That it's old? KWM01: yeah KWM01: I reading along and then they mention something like microfilm and it breaks my concentration QueenSidhe: Ahh. QueenSidhe: That didn't really bother me since I knew this was written a long time ago. QueenSidhe: No digital yet... KWM01: lol QueenSidhe: I might have paused now and then to think about what those tools were, but it didn't break my concentration. KWM01: it's just that everytime I hit one of those, it reminds me how old the book is. QueenSidhe: And for the time, it would have made sense to use those tools so you don't confuse the reader with names you've never heard of and aren't quite sure of the purpose. QueenSidhe: True. QueenSidhe: One thing that did annoy me at the beginning was the term contragravity. QueenSidhe: I kept wanting to say countergravity. :P KWM01: lol KWM01: brb QueenSidhe: k KWM01: back QueenSidhe: wb QueenSidhe: What did you think of the veradicator, or whatever it's called? QueenSidhe: I wonder if our current lie detectors work better than that machine. KWM01: nice concept but unrealistic QueenSidhe: Why unrealistic? KWM01: The brain is different from person to person. to just sitdown and be able to tell the differnce KWM01: is not realistic KWM01: no calabration QueenSidhe: Ahh. True. QueenSidhe: I didn't think about that. :_ KWM01: I lie alot. :-) KWM01: maybe. :-) QueenSidhe: lol KWM01: but lie detecters today just measure your blood pressure QueenSidhe: Really? QueenSidhe: I didn't know that. KWM01: yup KWM01: if you lie, your blood pressure tends to go up. QueenSidhe: Hmm. That might be interesting to see. KWM01: but it doesn't work on everyone. QueenSidhe: Just to play with. :-) KWM01: :-) KWM01: and they can be fooled. QueenSidhe: Yeah, if you're able to keep your blood pressure constant. KWM01: drugs and meditation mostly QueenSidhe: Fast penta! KWM01: lol KWM01: love that, espectially on mile KWM01: miles QueenSidhe: If we did have something that worked as well as the veradicator, do you think we'd use it as much as in Little Fuzzy? QueenSidhe: Yeah, I love Miles when he's hyper. QueenSidhe: I should go read Brothers in Arms again. :D KWM01: we'd probably use it more oftern. KWM01: and I'd hate to see it in the hands of a dictator QueenSidhe: Yeah. QueenSidhe: I wonder if we'd use it on everyone who testifies. QueenSidhe: Since you already swear to tell the truth... QueenSidhe: I wonder what color it would be when you plead the fifth. KWM01: might not help as much as you think. QueenSidhe: Yeah, if you can convince yourself that what you're telling is the truth, it'd be blue. KWM01: ever do that experiment on eye witnesses? KWM01: everyone boody sees somrthing different QueenSidhe: I was actually expecting Mallin(?) to have hypnotized himself to believe that fuzzies weren't sapient. QueenSidhe: Yeah, I've heard that. Never done the experiment. KWM01: hmm, that might work too QueenSidhe: The globe only tells you what you believe is true. QueenSidhe: Although, it is interesting that it turned read for the paper Mallin stole when he didn't even remember that he had stolen it. QueenSidhe: red, not read. :P KWM01: must read the unconcious mind too QueenSidhe: Yeah, although, that might not be realistic. ;-) KWM01: lol QueenSidhe: I wonder if your brainwaves change when you lie. KWM01: maybe but I don't know if they'll let you drg an MRI into a courtroom. :-) QueenSidhe: :D KWM01: ok, sir. swear on this bible and get in the tube. QueenSidhe: lol QueenSidhe: I wonder if they make you swear on the bible if you believe in the koran or some other religion.... KWM01: hmm , don't know. QueenSidhe: Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help you Goddess. QueenSidhe: (Or however that goes.) KWM01: Judge, I'm an athiest. Can I swear on this Bujold book? QueenSidhe: Hehehe QueenSidhe: I swear to be like Miles under fast penta. KWM01: lol KWM01: I think they arrest people for that. QueenSidhe: lol QueenSidhe: Contempt of court or something probably KWM01: yup QueenSidhe: Well, anyways, time to go home. KWM01: nite QueenSidhe: Talk to you later! QueenSidhe: Night. KWM01 has left the room. |
