ZorPrime67: I'm a slow reader.... hehe QueenSidhe: I haven't had a lot of reading time. QueenSidhe: lol. no problem. ZorPrime67: same.... hehehe D2 got me last weekend.... couldnt get away.... i need a doctor mb rofl :) QueenSidhe: lol. I was playing D2 this weekend too. QueenSidhe: So I didn't get to start the book until late Monday and yesterday. ZorPrime67: Wanna hear something funny too ? about that book heh QueenSidhe: Sure. ZorPrime67: My version is in french :) QueenSidhe: Do you read French well? ZorPrime67: I'm french hehehe ZorPrime67: I can read english and french. ZorPrime67: although I prefer the original version. QueenSidhe: Yeah. I was wondering what the translation would do to all the names and such. ZorPrime67: hehehehe ZorPrime67: That something we can do :) ZorPrime67: btw I'm still searching for Lythande QueenSidhe: I finally got a book cover up. QueenSidhe: For that book. ZorPrime67: hehe QueenSidhe: It should be a pretty fast read since it's a book of short stories. ZorPrime67: k ZorPrime67: hehehe it isnt pretty.... :) QueenSidhe: The pic? ZorPrime67: yep QueenSidhe: I scanned my copy of the book. ZorPrime67: doh.... not many people.... QueenSidhe: Yeah. I was thinking at least one other person would show. QueenSidhe: He or she is new too, but read the book, I think. ZorPrime67: k QueenSidhe: Offered me a copy, anyway. QueenSidhe: Oh well, what do you think of the book so far? ZorPrime67: its good but not great. you? QueenSidhe: It's interesting, but the style is uncomfortable for me. QueenSidhe: I'm never exactly sure when things are happening. QueenSidhe: And I'd like to learn more about Snow Crash and we learn about it very slowly. ZorPrime67: Well, I tired of those apocalyptic story :). I dont know about you but sometimes I ask myself: How the hell is he/she doing there? heh. ZorPrime67: kind of confusing. QueenSidhe: How who is doing where? ZorPrime67: In the book. sometimes character goes from a place to another one without any information.... ZorPrime67: like when we change chapter. QueenSidhe: Oh. Yes, I have the same problem. ZorPrime67: Whats the name of the hacker in the english book ? Hiro? QueenSidhe: And you don't know _when_ you are either. ZorPrime67: yep QueenSidhe: Yes, Hiro. ZorPrime67: hmmm first, to avoid spoiler, where is he right now ? hehehe QueenSidhe: It would be much easier w/ dates. ZorPrime67: yep QueenSidhe: Talking to the librarian. ZorPrime67: k QueenSidhe: And Y.T. has just gotten the first sample of Snow Crash. ZorPrime67: for the mafia right? QueenSidhe: Yes. QueenSidhe: She's told Hiro about Ng, too. ZorPrime67: Ng is cool. I liked that character. QueenSidhe: Kinda interesting. Does he show up more? ZorPrime67: Nope. well mb in the last 100 pages he will :) hopefully QueenSidhe: His life support system kind of reminds me of McCaffrey's brains. QueenSidhe: =) ZorPrime67: heh QueenSidhe: While I was looking for info about Stephenson, I saw a comment saying his stuff are pretty good predictors of real life. QueenSidhe: So while reading, I was trying to spot some stuff. QueenSidhe: Like the popularity of reality TV. ZorPrime67: I like is vision of the Internet. that book was written in 1992... looking at the internet now, its kind of funny... QueenSidhe: That CIC spy show reminded me of the TV show, The Mole. QueenSidhe: saw it for the first time yesterday. QueenSidhe: The internet is kind of like that now. QueenSidhe: Except no VR yet. ZorPrime67: hehehe. never watched it. i'll take a look next week. QueenSidhe: It's about a group of people working together to make money. QueenSidhe: But there's one mole in the group trying to sabatoge their chances. ZorPrime67: hehe QueenSidhe: They have to complete tasks to win the money. ZorPrime67: look interesting.... hehe ZorPrime67: I really like the delivery pizza description. The introduction of the 2 heroes was nicely done IMHO QueenSidhe: That was cool. ZorPrime67: One part that is pretty dull to read, well for me anyway, was the part with the librarian. All that god things kind of drive me to go sleep :) ZorPrime67: err drove QueenSidhe: Yeah. QueenSidhe: And I got to that point when I was thinking, I'm not going to finish in time for this chat. Ack! ZorPrime67: Same hehehe QueenSidhe: So I tried skimming. But still didn't have enough time. ZorPrime67: I read all evening and during my lunch time.... damn..... QueenSidhe: I also found the mention of daemons interesting because The Golden Compass had a lot to do with daemons. QueenSidhe: I read all day too. ZorPrime67: I'll finish it. Now its getting pretty entertaining :) not that it wasnt earlier. It just got more entertaining. QueenSidhe: That's good. QueenSidhe: I want to learn more about what Snow Crash is doing. QueenSidhe: I liked the part in the Black Sun and learning about Da5id. ZorPrime67: well you learn some more with the librarian i guess. QueenSidhe: But that style is dry because the librarian is leacturing. ZorPrime67: yep but Hiro didnt seemed very shocked when he saw Da5id in the "coma" ZorPrime67: heh ZorPrime67: The librarian is dull! :) QueenSidhe: No he wasnt, was he. I read that part a little fast. QueenSidhe: Maybe he new there were going to be some big problems. ZorPrime67: mb... but I think he should have had some reaction. It seemed to me that he didnt have any reaction.It didnt fueled anything in him. ZorPrime67: or mb I skipped a line or 2 rofl QueenSidhe: Shcok maybe? QueenSidhe: He did spend the night sitting on Da5id's rood. ZorPrime67: maybe a little.... not enough IMO. ZorPrime67: hmm thats a start :) QueenSidhe: But still, he was kind of blasé about it, wasn't he? ZorPrime67: yep QueenSidhe: I'll have to look it over again. ZorPrime67: But if I think again, it was hiro who told Da5id to try that hypercard (is that the right word in the english version) even though Juanita warned him. QueenSidhe: Yes. QueenSidhe: Let me look. QueenSidhe: Just a minute. QueenSidhe: Well, first Hiro is surprised that Da5id took the hypercard in the first place. QueenSidhe: But Da5id said that he has so much antivirul medicine that he's immune. QueenSidhe: Also, they don't believe any drug can actually hurt the person. QueenSidhe: After all, your body isn't really in the Metaverse. ZorPrime67: oh yeah. QueenSidhe: So since Da5id believed he was perfectly safe, why not try it? ZorPrime67: Yep QueenSidhe: But that's an overconfident view, IMO. ZorPrime67: Well he seemed very powerful in the metaverse. QueenSidhe: You have no clue what new viruses are out there and what backdoors they can find into your system. QueenSidhe: True. QueenSidhe: But that might just be because of money. ZorPrime67: heh QueenSidhe: What he and his company did took the help of others. QueenSidhe: Like the faces. QueenSidhe: All Juanita's work. QueenSidhe: I like what she said about facial messages. QueenSidhe: And it's true. QueenSidhe: You can misinterprate what people write very easily. QueenSidhe: Especially since most people can't write well. I think it can acheive that. How long although... thats a good question hehee ZorPrime67: One thing very high tech was the "vehicule" of Y.T. QueenSidhe: Probably a long time. QueenSidhe: Still need to get everyone at a fater rate. QueenSidhe: Otherwise lag will be a killer. ZorPrime67: yep QueenSidhe: Oh yes. That was a very nice skateboard. ZorPrime67: DSL and Cable is getting more popular everyday. QueenSidhe: And sometimes it even seemed to recognize her. ZorPrime67: That skateboard is way too much high tech! heheh QueenSidhe: Yeah. And the cars sound pretty much like they are now. ZorPrime67: How long until we see that ? 3000 years prolly lol :) QueenSidhe: I'd think they'd be able to transfer some of that tech over. ZorPrime67: hehe QueenSidhe: I wonder what kind of circuity that would need. QueenSidhe: It might make the board very heavy. ZorPrime67: I wonder too... it's easier to work on the suspension. QueenSidhe: Did you notice any references to what happened to cause the collapse of the US? ZorPrime67: Nope. QueenSidhe: It seemed like it happened late in the centurary. QueenSidhe: Since Vietnam still took place. ZorPrime67: The description of the world is not well made. ZorPrime67: yep ZorPrime67: How old is Hiro? QueenSidhe: 30 or so. ZorPrime67: k QueenSidhe: How long do you think it would take for the US to collapse in such a way? ZorPrime67: Hmm... good question. ZorPrime67: It could take a lot of time.... ZorPrime67: The US in that book seems pretty paranoid.... QueenSidhe: That's what I thought. QueenSidhe: And all those different ethnicities and new names. ZorPrime67: Its hard for me to believe that the US would lose some territory... they dont seem pretty big anymore in that book ZorPrime67: yeah QueenSidhe: My interpretation was that the US completely collapsed an dother groups came in and took over. QueenSidhe: And maybe the North lost the Civil War? ZorPrime67: Well since it might be hard, the author had a big time finding a way to explain it to us so he didnt mention a lot hehe QueenSidhe: There was mention of some Confederate burg. ZorPrime67: Hmmm... I dont recall. read too fast mb. The librarian should have explain some to Hiro. :) QueenSidhe: That's mentioned briefly around page 60-150, I think. QueenSidhe: SOmewhere in there. QueenSidhe: When they were listing different burgs. QueenSidhe: Maybe when Y.T. and Hiro were running away from the taxi people? ZorPrime67: k... I'll have to check that. thats something that I really wanted to learn more. ZorPrime67: oh ZorPrime67: That was so confusing for me ZorPrime67: I'll reread. ZorPrime67: Well when they appear in the book, I was like: Where the hell they came from ?! hehehehe ZorPrime67: It was interesting anyway.... QueenSidhe: Very. QueenSidhe: When he first talks about what the dog is thinking, I thought, "Where are we now?" QueenSidhe: And who are those people. QueenSidhe: Then I went back and reread part of it. ZorPrime67: hehehe same... QueenSidhe: Light goes off, "Oh! That's Hiro and Y.T." QueenSidhe: Or on. ZorPrime67: hehe ZorPrime67: After some thinking, I think the US got where it is (in the book) because of racism... ZorPrime67: All those division are based on race.... QueenSidhe: YEah.
